Court use on club nights

Among the matters considered at the Club's 2018 Annual General Meeting was feedback from a number of our members on the use of courts on club nights.

It was agreed at the meeting that we would try to continue to accommodate the wishes of all of our members.  The meeting agreed a proposal for the use of courts on club nights designed to retain the "open to all" ethos that has been central to the growth and success of the Club since the Club's low point in 2008, encourage an inclusive approach where members have the opportunities to play with and against other players of varying standards, encourage our top players to attend club nights and support the competitive success of our top league teams.  The following was therefore agreed at the meeting:

  1. Treating members fairly:  All members are expected to treat their fellow members fairly and with respect.  That includes ensuring on Monday and Thursday club nights that all members present are given equal opportunities to play, members have opportunities to play with and against other players of varying standards and players are not excluded based on their perceived playing standard.  Any member who is concerned that this is not being applied may raise the issue in confidence with any one of the Office Bearers: President (John), Secretary (Sandi) or Treasurer (Ross) and discuss how the matter could be best resolved.
  2. Supporting competitive success (Glenearn A): On a week where Glenearn A has a scheduled league match (approximately 10 weeks per season), one of the four courts will be designated for 45 minutes from 7:45pm to 8:30pm on a Monday for Glenearn A practice.  The Glenearn A captain (Johanna) will oversee the use of the designated court for that 45 minutes and may involve Glenearn A players as well as other players.  Alternatively, the Glenearn A captain may release the court for general use (in line with point 1 above).  The first club night where this applies will be Monday 24 September 2018 and other dates will be confirmed.
  3. Supporting competitive success (Glenearn B): On a week where Glenearn B has a scheduled league match (approximately 10 weeks per season) and only if Glenearn A does not have a scheduled league match, one of the four courts will be designated for 45 minutes from 7:45pm to 8:30pm on a Monday for Glenearn B practice.  The Glenearn B  captain (Ally) will oversee the use of the designated court for that 45 minutes and may involve Glenearn B players as well as other players.  Alternatively, the Glenearn B captain may release the court for general use (in line with point 1 above).  The first club night where this applies will be Monday 1 October 2018 and other dates will be confirmed.
  4. Encouraging our top players to attend club nights:  Any players involved in competitive practice in line with points 2 and 3 above will be encouraged to stay for the remainder of the club night and mix in with other players present in line with point 1 above.  In any event, all players will be required to pay their £5 club night fee even if they only play for 45 minutes.
  5. For avoidance of doubt, a maximum of one court for 45 minutes will be designated for competitive practice on any given Monday club night and no courts will be so designated on a Thursday club night.
  6. If adopting the above approach results in insufficient court time for players on club nights, we will consider increasing from 4 to 5 courts on Monday in agreement with Taybank.
